With the fall of the Soviet Union and the break down of traditional warfare, terrorism has become the international security threat of the 21st century. Terrorist groups have been around for a while, but 9-11 and other strikes of similar magnitude have made terrorism a major national security threat to countries worldwide.
Kinds of terrorist groups
The Terrorism Knowledge Base (the most amazing online data tool known to mankind) breaks down terrorist groups into 10 kinds: anarchist, anti-globalist, communist/socialist, environmental, leftist, nationalist/separatist, racist, religious and right-wing (conservative and reactionary). Looking at the number of injuries they're responsible for since 1968, you get a sense of how relatively dangerous they are:
